US Department of Transportation Secretary Zhao Xiaolan recently announced that the US government will provide more than US$220 million in grants to 15 US states and regions to improve port facilities through the Maritime Administration’s port infrastructure development plan.

“This $220 million federal grant will improve the ports of the United States. Nearly half of the projects are located in opportunity zones, which were created to revitalize economically depressed communities.”

The funds are used for facilities in or near coastal ports and to provide support for planning, capital construction improvements, project management and operations.

In a statement, Maritime Administration Director Mark h. Buzby said, “These grants will help our country’s economy and ensure that US ports can continue to be effective in the highly competitive global market. Operations.”

The key points of the announced funding include: US$20 million for the railway station renovation of the Norfolk International Freight Station; US$22 million for the reconstruction and restoration of the Crown Bay Freight Station on St. Thomas; US$10 million for the restoration of the Port of Coos Bay 134 miles of railway line; $10 million for terminal renovation to help upgrade the freight station of the former Avondale Shipyard.

Baltimore, Maryland: Mid-Atlantic Intermodal Center (US$10 million)

This grant will add additional channels, build a bulk cargo import and export terminal, install a modern gateway complex, and upgrade the heavy-duty road network. The project will upgrade railway connections and repair all aging utilities.

Wilmington, North Carolina: Container Portal Innovation and Channel ($16 million)

The grant will build a new container portal with optical character recognition and dynamic weighing sensors, so that drivers do not need to stop when entering and leaving the port. The proposed improvements also enable the port to streamline the flow of container traffic throughout the terminal and open up additional yard storage capacity.

Conneaut: Port of Conneaut Connector (Port of Conneaut Connector, USD 20 million)

Port Connio is a deep-water port of the Great Lakes on Lake Erie. This grant will help connect trucks and rail freight to Port Connio. The project includes the construction of a dredger facility to maintain a shipping channel, a new highway, and a new railway branch line.

Seattle, Washington: Terminal 5 Heights Modernization and Reconstruction Project ($10.7 million)

This grant will be used to support the improvement of infrastructure, including pavement, pavement and reinforcement of the entire terminal rainwater treatment system.
