According to Mining.com, Sydney-based Australian Vital Metals Company officially launched the mining business of the Nechalacho Rare Earth Project in Northwestern Canada. This project makes Vital Metals the first Canadian company to mine rare earths for electric vehicles, aerospace, defense and electronic products. Element producer, this will also be the second rare earth miner in North America. The company’s goal is to develop a rare earth deposit of the highest grade in the world and the only rare earth project capable of beneficiation only through ore sorting.

The Nechalacho project is a high-grade light rare earth (bastnaeite) project located in Nechalacho, Northwestern Canada. It is possible to start mining from a high-grade, easy-to-access near-surface mineralization zone. The Nechalacho Rare Earth Project is located in the upper area. The measured, indicated and inferred JORC (Australian Joint Committee on Mineral Reserves Standard) resource is 94 Mt, and the TREO (Total Rare Earth Oxide) content is 1.46%. The company plans to build a rare earth mine in two phases, first focusing on resources in the North T area. In the second phase, the company will target the larger Taldiv deposit. The North T area will be mined as a small open-pit mine, and the materials will be transported to the company’s on-site ore sorter. The products will then be sent to a rare earth refinery in Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan for further processing. Vital’s goal is to produce at least 5,000 tons of rare earth oxides by 2025.

As early as February, Vital Metals had announced that it had signed a rare earth mining contract with Canada. In addition, in early March, the privately held U.S. rare earth company invested in SearchMinerals’ rare earth project in Newfoundland, eastern Canada. Although the U.S. Rare Earth Company has controlled a rare earth mine in Texas, executives said they hope to obtain more minerals for the manufacture of electronic products and weapons.
